The Santa Cruz de la Cañada Land Grant is considered one of New Mexico’s mother land grants and has for many centuries served as the center of Northern New Mexico; Self Governance, Sovereignty, Culture, Economy, and Resistance. It is often mis-represented as a land grant of only Spanish settlers however we now know, through oral and written history, that we are a land grant of much diversity where our Mestizaje connects us to our indigenous inheritance and confirms our rights to exist in this space and place. As the Governor of our sister land grant of Santo Tomas de Abiquiú says "we earned our land through blood shed" speaking to the incredible sacrifice our ancestors made to protect the surrounding pueblos and Spanish villas.
"If the lion doesn't live to tell the story of his tale, the story will always glorify that of the hunter."
